Contend O Lord with those who contend with me;
fight against those who fight against me.
Take up shield and buckler;
arise and come to my aide. Brandish spear and
javelin against all that pursue me. Say to my
soul, “I am your salvation.”
- Psalm 35: 1-3

It has been a long winter so far, don’t you think? Between the snow and ice and wind and cold, our life is happening. It seems like a whirlwind to me sitting here this last week of February. Add all the concerns over taxes, health, day-to-day tasks, friends and family and church members with needs, and everything else, this has been a long winter. I don’t know what the Groundhog was thinking on Feb 2!

Things can seem so against us—the national and international news, the local gossip, the personal dramas, the trying to make ends meet, the anger or regret or angst of relationships with so many others, the things never ending, the laundry, the dishes, etc. It can all feel like we are trapped with an army encamped against us. Then a blessing—a Blizzard stops us and we are forced
to think and reflect and at least slow down and get things we have put off done at home. My mind went to Psalm 35. It doesn’t change the sense of being embattled. It doesn’t change all the things out of our control from politics to the cold and snow. But somehow, sitting here with the snow all around and no way to travel it is comforting to hear verse 3—Say to my soul, “I am  your salvation.” God is the one to rest in, God is the one in control. God has you and me in His hands.

So in this cold winter, and as we enter the season of Lent, know that God is with you in all that is out of your control, all that is pushing in on you. God is not only there but is leading and guiding and providing for you, letting you walk through it and out the other side. Easter is coming, Spring is on the way, Salvation is God’s and in Jesus it will be good and free. Pain and suffering and dark and snow might still be in the days ahead, but so is God’s love and salvation. It is like a hot cup of coffee with chocolate to my soul to hear that. Thank God I can hear that. Thank God.
